Origin
"Nooo! No!" — often written in Korean as "ah… andwae" — comes from a scene late in episode 13 of the 2009 KBS2 drama Iris. The protagonist Kim Hyun-jun (Lee Byung-hun) watches a video on his phone showing his mentor figure, Dr. Yoo Jung-hoon (Kim Kap-soo), being killed by Baek-san (Kim Young-cheol), and cries out.
It was one of the heaviest beats in the series, yet what viewers remembered was not the tragedy but how off the delivery felt. Many said the line's tone did not match the extremity of the moment, and as the clip circulated on communities and YouTube the scene itself became a meme.
Spread, and the actor's answer
The scene settled into a reaction image for whenever something unexpected goes wrong. The line is short and the expression is broad, so it fits almost any situation; edits, redubs and remixes ran for years.
The common explanation is that Lee acted the scene while looking at a phone that was not actually playing anything, which is why his gaze and reaction land oddly. His own recent position is a little different. Appearing on the YouTube show "Jjanhan Hyung" on March 24th, 2025, Lee said of the scene, "that acting is accurate — I still don't see anything wrong with it", explaining he had tried several deliveries before settling on that one. He added that he now takes the meme in stride: if you can't avoid it, enjoy it.
It is cited both as a case of an actor being summoned by a mocked scene rather than a celebrated one, and as a case of the person in question refusing to be defensive about it.
Usage
- Layering exaggerated despair on a trivial accident — a spilled cup, an unsaved file
- As a reaction to being spoiled, or to a result flipping
- As a caption on the moment a lead collapses in game or sports coverage
- As material for deliberately mistoned roleplay bits
