Origin

The line comes from episode 21 of Olympos Guardian, a Korean animated series that retold Greek and Roman mythology for children. It aired on SBS and Tooniverse between 2003 and 2004, adapted from Lee Hee-jae's comic series Greek and Roman Mythology in Comics.

The scene takes place at a festival hosted by Dionysus, god of wine and revelry, where the guests are pleasantly drunk. Orpheus arrives late and apologizes formally: "I'm terribly sorry for being late, Lord Dionysus." Dionysus replies, "Hm? You've killed the mood, so take responsibility for it." Orpheus simply answers, "Yes, understood."

Dionysus is not actually angry. The joke is that Orpheus's stiff, unnecessary formality is itself what deflates the party atmosphere — so Dionysus playfully holds him accountable for it. Broadcast details and a transcript of the scene are documented on Namuwiki.

Spread

The scene attracted no particular attention when it originally aired. It became a meme more than a decade later, around June 2016, when the clip resurfaced on Twitter.

From Twitter it spread quickly to YouTube, TVPle, and Facebook, and was later referenced on broadcast programs including SNL Korea. As a result, the line became familiar even to people who had never seen the original series.

Three factors drove the spread. First, the inverted logic: the person who apologized ends up being the one held responsible. Second, its universality — the line fits almost any situation. Third, Dionysus's sly expression and delivery made the moment easy to cut into a short, shareable clip.

Usage

It is used to tease someone for being needlessly serious or formal in a way that dampens the mood. It never carries real accusation; it functions as a signal to lighten up.

Variants and Derivatives

The original scene does not end there. Orpheus complies by playing his lyre and revives the party — and that follow-through became the main raw material for edits. A common format swaps the lyre's sound for an incongruous track, such as an electric guitar, over footage of the surrounding characters dancing. Parodies include a version using the Korean cartoon Black Rubber Shoes, rhythm-game versions, and an SNL Korea sketch featuring comedian Kwon Hyuk-soo.

Another common variation lifts just the closing "take responsibility" and attaches it to other sentences. The meme also revived interest in Olympos Guardian as a whole, prompting users to dig up other lines and scenes from the same series. A children's educational cartoon being rediscovered and re-consumed by adults more than ten years later makes this a defining example of Korea's "retro animation revival" meme genre.
