"Neujot" is a contraction of neukkim jota, "the feeling is good." Who first used it, and when, is not pinned down. What is recorded is that a different contraction circulated first: joheun neukkim ("good feeling") was shortened to joneu, and then the reversed form neujot overtook it in frequency until it displaced the original entirely.
Which of the two survived was decided by pronunciation rather than meaning. Joneu stumbles — a consonant follows a final consonant — while neujot runs together in a single breath. Between two contractions with identical meaning, the one that sits easier in the mouth won.
How it is used
The key to its usage is that it takes a noun to form a compound: neujot-nam (a man with a good vibe), neujot-nyeo (a woman), neujot-ka (a café), neujot codi (an outfit). It therefore functions less as an exclamation than as a modifier.
The thing to note is that this is not an appraisal of looks. It does not denote objectively attractive features but covers the overall impression created by a distinctive presence. Neujot-nam does not mean handsome, it means someone whose atmosphere works, and the two judgments frequently diverge. The same holds when the subject is not a person: applied to a café or an outfit, it does not mean expensive or flashy, it means the mood lands.
