Origin

"Ssawo" ("Fight") is a meme from a scene in which former South Korea national football team coach Hong Myung-bo, at a team meeting, put nothing but the English word "FIGHT" on a screen and stressed "ssawo." The joke lies in the contrast between a coach demanding grit with a single word instead of tactical explanation and players listening with blank faces.

The scene comes from a documentary series about the national team that Coupang Play released ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. According to Seoul Shinmun, at a meeting before a November 2025 friendly against Ghana, Hong displayed "FIGHT" on screen and said "ssawo", urging players to avoid reckless behavior while keeping up the intensity for the whole match. Some also noted the irony of players coached by world-class managers like José Mourinho and Thomas Tuchel receiving such basic motivation.

Spread

The scene drew little attention when the documentary came out but was abruptly revived after the 2026 World Cup. South Korea was eliminated in the group stage with one win and two losses, and after a loss to lower-ranked South Africa in particular, Hong resigned. According to Naver DataLab, searches for "Hong Myung-bo" hit their highest level in a year on June 29, the day of his resignation press conference. Around then, parodies twisting the "ssawo" scene flooded social media, including videos dubbing the line over scenes from Netflix dramas.

The meme soon spilled into promotional content. According to a July 2026 Hankyung report, a video from a meat restaurant passed 1.3 million views in two days, and an LG Electronics store posted content titled "Hong Myung-bo-style appliance sales strategy." Chuncheon City used the format in a promotional video for its municipal vision report, and the Korea Forest Service's Hongcheon office used it for a wildfire-prevention video in which firefighters receive a monotone "ssawo" order before heading out. Meanwhile, unlike at past World Cups, no airport welcome ceremony was held for the returning team.
