The "Darkness Challenge" is believed to have originated in September 2024, started by a Chinese TikTok user named "ai_yin_yue." The user posted a video where they wore loose pajamas when the lights were on, which transformed into tight-fitting clothes when the lights were turned off, garnering significant attention.

Subsequently, other users began creating videos where their outfits changed in sync with the light switch. These videos emphasizing surprise transformations quickly spread across TikTok and YouTube. In South Korea, TikTok accounts such as "Ddalset," "Yunamong," and YouTube channels like "Ddangjulse," "Hyejji," and "Ipurple" also uploaded Darkness Challenge videos, gaining popularity.

The Darkness Challenge is characterized by drastic changes in clothing or appearance coordinated with turning lights on and off. Participants often change from loose clothing to tight outfits or remove their tops during the transition. These videos typically feature the remix version of "Batte Forte" by the Italian girl group "Lollipop" as the background music. The dramatic transformation in clothing or appearance as the lights turn on and off is a key element.

This challenge uses hashtags like "Light Switch Disguise," emphasizing the surprise transformations. Videos where participants change into tight-fitting or revealing outfits after turning off the lights are particularly popular.
