If You're Coming at Me, Just Face Me Head-on

On April 25, 2024, Min Hee-jin, then CEO of ADOR — a HYBE sublabel — held an emergency press conference. It came in the middle of a management-control dispute between HYBE and ADOR, and it was broadcast live in front of hundreds of reporters. Rather than reading a polished statement she spoke in an agitated register, profanity and all, and one line was: "If you're coming for me, come at me straight, one on one — don't throw fits behind my back like a coward." "Matdai" is slang for squaring off one-on-one, and it was in use well before this press conference; the phrase was not coined so much as rediscovered. What made it land was placement, not vocabulary. The head of a major label, at an official press conference with every camera rolling, reached for language that belongs to a street fight — the situation itself was the shock.

Clips were cut and circulating on community boards and social media the same day, and the trend peaked around May 2024. Commercialization was just as fast: barely a week later, on May 3, outlets reported that a character NFT built around the line had been released. Television picked it up too, with SNL Korea among the programs parodying the press conference.

The sentence lasted because its use is unambiguous. "Stop scheming behind my back and face me" is fully contained in one line, so people who knew nothing about the underlying corporate dispute could still deploy it as is.
