Origin

The full sentence is "My life really did change after I OO'd." It is a post format in which someone testifies, in complete earnest, that some trivial purchase or new hobby elevated their entire station in life.

The post that made the format publicly known appeared around March 2020: "My life really did change after I bought an iPhone," posted to the smartphone gallery on DCInside. It opens by explaining that in high school the author could not meet a bully's eyes, littered anywhere and spat on the ground — but that after becoming the owner of a 64GB iPhone XS Max, he found himself trying to carry himself with dignity.

That post was not, however, the original. The same format already existed in 2019 in DCInside's certification-exam gallery, and the version circulating today had also appeared in 2019 in the Falcom minor gallery. The smartphone gallery post is what carried the format outside its home board.

Spread

What landed was the attitude rather than the structure. Posts imitating earnest self-confession were already common; the novelty was pairing that register with a declaration that buying a single phone had changed a life. Because the iPhone was already a touchy subject on device-focused boards, the post quickly became a fixed running joke there.

From then on it was replicated endlessly by swapping out the object at the front: "My life really did change after I started playing Tekken," "My life really did change after I bought Samsung Electronics stock," and so on, spreading through gaming, stock and hobby boards and eventually out onto social media. The sentence is simple, and the opening word alone is enough to summon the original — which made it easy to copy.

How it is used

  • As a self-deprecating brag about a new purchase or hobby, exaggerated far enough to be the joke itself
  • As a sly dig, replying to someone else's showing-off post in the same format
  • As a joke that dresses up a trivial change of habit in grand terms
  • As a short comment that merely opens with the giveaway phrase and leaves the rest implied
