Sounds Like a Lie

Origin

"Gura gateunde" (구라같은데, roughly "sounds like a lie to me") is an image macro: five Korean characters laid over the face of a single cat. The cat is not a drawing but a real street cat, filmed for the Chinese remote street-cat feeder service Hello Street Cat and posted on its Instagram account @hello.street.cat. Communities in and outside Korea know the cat as Mr. Fresh.

The expression is the entire joke. Half-lidded eyes, a downturned mouth, a flat stare at the camera — it maps precisely onto the state of not believing someone while declining to say so outright. Paired with gura, slang for "lie," and the hedging ending -gateunde, the caption casts doubt without committing to an accusation.

Spread

It took hold in Korean communities around May 2024. Posts introducing the cat image as "the meme everyone's using right now" appeared in quick succession on The Qoo and Dmitory, followed by a steady stream of threads asking where the original came from. Because only the caption needs changing, spin-offs putting different lines on the same cat circulated alongside it.

Its spread also carried word of a controversy around the cat itself. In May 2024 a widely shared post on X noted that after the cat became famous, certain groups exploited and abused it, and urged people to think twice about consuming it purely as meme fodder. It is worth knowing before using the image.

How it's used

It substitutes for an argument when you don't buy what someone just said. Softer than calling it a lie outright, it leaves room to pass the whole thing off as a joke.

Replying to a friend's inflated war story or humblebrag
Against stock excuses like "I'll be there in five minutes" or "just left the house"
Under unsourced claims or suspiciously glowing product reviews
At oneself, when you don't believe your own plan

A counterpart image reading "sounds real, actually" is often used as its pair. Either way the tone is the same: judgment deferred rather than delivered.
