Origin

The scene comes from a preliminary round of Mnet's Superstar K 2 in 2010. The contestant was Kim Tae-heon, then a second-year student at Daegi High School, who sang and danced on stage to a chilly response from the judges. Trying to lighten the room, judge Gil asked out of nowhere whether he had a girlfriend, and Kim answered, "I don't." The joke is not the answer but the structure of asking twice and answering twice. The first "I don't" was already enough; asked again, he prefixes a "no" as if to eliminate any room for misreading and trails off with "just." Becoming that emphatic about something requiring no denial at all is the awkwardness at the meme's core. Coming right after a set that had not gone well, the embarrassment still on his face made it land harder.

Right after broadcast, clips and captures of that exchange alone spread across community boards and became a stock image. What characterizes the meme is that although the source is a singing competition, what survived was not a performance but one line from a waiting-room interview.

Years later the subject's life since became news again.
