Origin

The line comes from a green-room segment on MBC's variety show I Am a Singer 2 in 2012. The format cut to the other contestants watching from the green room every time one singer finished a set, and Park Mi-kyung — who appeared on the show for roughly two months beginning April 29, 2012 — produced the moment there by reacting far more energetically than the situation called for. After the rock band Baekdusan finished, she called out, "Wow, of course, senior Baeksudan! You completely turned the stage upside down!" She had said "Baeksudan" instead of "Baekdusan," and her intonation and expression were as stiff as someone reading off a script. The details are documented in the Namu Wiki entry on the phrase.

The joke is not the slip alone. The sentence is meant to express awe, yet carries no feeling, and the carefully enunciated rhythm makes it sound scripted rather than sincere. That awkwardness was strong enough that the reaction is remembered far better than Baekdusan's actual performance.

The epicenter was the I Am a Singer gallery on DCInside. The clip was consumed intensively there right after broadcast, producing a flood of jokes and parodies. Someone noted that her delivery looked robotic, and the nickname "Bot Mi-kyung" stuck — reportedly beginning with a post from a user going by "Gagara."

The phrase then split into two uses. One names the soulless, read-off-the-page reaction seen from TV guests. The other borrows only the sentence frame and swaps the object, as in saying a standout player "turned the Rift upside down." Because the original was inflated praise to begin with, the shell of it could be attached to anything.
