The Vibe That Comes From Experience

Origin

The phrase comes from rapper One Sun, a first-generation Korean hip-hop artist who appeared in the 2016 preliminaries of Mnet's "Show Me The Money 5." Certain he would pass, he said "there's a vibe that comes out of seniority," and then was cut roughly thirty seconds into his stage (Ilyo Shinmun interview, July 18, 2016). The gap between the size of the confidence and the size of the result was so wide that the single sentence was clipped out and became a catchphrase within days of broadcast.

"Jjam" is military slang for time served and the seasoned competence it supposedly produces; "vibe" is the atmosphere someone gives off. Put together, the phrase means "the thing that seeps out of anyone who has done this a long time." The expression itself is sincere, but because that sincerity was not backed by the outcome, it began circulating ironically.

One Sun said in interviews that he had not watched the broadcast and had no idea how it landed until hundreds of KakaoTalk messages poured in. Rather than getting defensive about the mockery, he took it plainly and honestly, and public reaction turned from teasing to support — which is why this meme, unlike most televised-failure memes, left behind affection for the person rather than contempt.

The scale of the trend was such that a fan-made simulation game called "Raising One Sun," premised on him winning Show Me The Money, appeared on Google Play. He returned for "Show Me The Money 6" the following year and was eliminated in the first round (Kookje Shinmun, July 1, 2017), and throughout that stretch the phrase kept being quoted on television and in online communities.

Usage

• To sincerely praise the seasoned competence of someone with long experience
• Conversely, to mock a situation where only the years are long and the skill never followed
• As a joke declaring baseless confidence in advance
• Shortened to "jjamba," it entered everyday Korean: "watching that senior work, you can feel the jjamba"
