Origin

"Y'all Living in 3017" is a caption meme attached to photos or videos of someone solving a mundane problem in an off-the-wall way. It usually takes the form "Y'all living in 2017, but this guy already in 3017," an exaggerated compliment saying the idea is a thousand years ahead of its time. Because the meme was born in 2017, the future year became 3017.

The earliest known use is a May 9, 2017 tweet by Twitter user @MyFavsTrash, which showed a full box of Reese's Puffs with a hole cut in the top and milk being poured straight in. The bowl-free life hack collected 18,000 retweets and 41,000 likes.

Spread

The meme took off a month later, in June 2017. On June 9, Twitter user @ovaisbowss posted a screenshot of someone who had aligned his Facebook profile picture with his cover photo so his face continued seamlessly across both, earning 107,000 retweets and 223,000 likes. Two days later, on June 11, @marissuh_x shared a photo of a card a man had handed her with a scannable code linking to his social media accounts, drawing 24,000 retweets and 71,000 likes.

That month PopBuzz, The Hook and Smosh covered the trend, and Twitter compiled notable examples into an official Moment. The format outlived its year, too, with variations that simply changed the date, such as a Jack Link's jerky ad referencing "3018" and a pool snorkel hack captioned with "2098."
