Origin

"You're working hard, though" comes from FIFA Online player-pack opening streams by Gamst, a Korean streamer known for football content. Pack-opening content is built on failure: the streamer opens packs alongside viewers hoping for a top card, and most pulls are players with little value, leaving a silence that flattens the stream. In one such moment Gamst, instead of showing his disappointment, forced his energy back up the instant the low-profile Korean player Kim Hyun-sung came out and mumbled, "You're working hard, though." The scene survives from a co-stream with Im Ani, and the background is documented in the Namu Wiki entry on the phrase.

The line is funny because the praise misses its target. What matters in a card pull is the player's stats and market price, and "he works hard" has nothing to do with either. It is a sentence shaped like a compliment that compliments nothing, so the attempt to hide disappointment only makes it more visible. That structure is the whole meme. Note that the incident most people associate with Gamst's pack openings — the "Po-Byungji incident" of July 2015, where four 2002 Legend packs all produced Kim Byung-ji cards — is a separate event.

It did not catch on at the time. The phrase became widely known much later, in 2023, when League of Legends streamer Lalo and the Twitch scene around him picked it up. A video titled "Lalo, you're working hard, though" uploaded to Lalo's channel on July 30, 2023 is generally credited with pushing it into wide recognition. It became a fixture of his streams — enough to be listed among his stock quotes — and the fact that Gamst originated it was rediscovered only afterward.

The revival worked because the sentence is not tied to a specific game or player. Strip it to its frame — the result is bad but we'll praise the effort — and it fits League, baseball, or office work equally well. Viewers who know nothing about FIFA card packs still get it from the words alone, and that portability is what let it spread.

• Brushing past a teammate's bad play in a game with "well, they're working hard, though."
• Consoling yourself with forced positivity after an unwanted gacha or pack result.
• Ironically defending a player or team with poor results.
• Genuinely comforting someone whose outcome was bad, using the joke format to carry sincerity.

What stands out is that the same sentence serves as both mockery and comfort. Delivered with forced enthusiasm it is teasing; delivered in a lower register it is real consolation. That double reading lets you acknowledge a bad result without wounding anyone, which is why it turns up so often in team-game chat.
