The Person

"Hansimjwa" is the nickname Korean internet users gave the Italian TikTok creator Khaby Lame (born Khabane Lame). Born in Senegal and raised in Italy after moving there as an infant, he worked as a CNC machine operator at a factory near Turin until he was laid off in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, at which point he started posting on TikTok. His first upload is dated March 15th, 2020.

The nickname joins hansim ("pathetic," "sad to watch") to the suffix -jwa, used online to mark someone as the definitive figure in a given domain. The suffix descends from bonjwa, a martial-arts-fiction honorific for oneself, and now means roughly "the one who represents this." It does not mean he is pathetic — it means he is the guy who makes that face.

Origin

The format that made him globally known is a video posted on April 26th, 2021. Reacting to a "life hack" clip promoting a gadget for separating pizza, Lame simply pulls the pizza apart with his hands, then looks at the camera, turns his palms up and shrugs. He says nothing. The video passed 200 million views in two months.

Silence is the core of the format. He watches a needlessly complicated solution, demonstrates the simplest possible alternative, and leaves nothing behind but an expression and a hand gesture. No language means no captions and no translation, which is exactly why it worked across every market at once.

Spread and Variations

The move to still images came in May 2021, when Twitter and Reddit began circulating two-panel image macros built from screenshots of the video. The structure mirrors the Drake meme: the top panel uses Lame's deadpan stare for the complicated approach, the bottom uses the open-palms shrug for the simple one. A May 13th post by the Twitter account @ChurchOfBoobism is cited as an early example, viral posts followed across r/dankmemes and r/funny, and a June 4th Tumblr post about Twitter Blue drew over 17,000 notes.

In August 2021 came a further derivative, the "Khaby Lame Mechanism" built by YouTuber ATMUMAN: a machine with Lame's head and a chain drive that rotates arm attachments so the hands flop down onto the surface, physically reproducing his signature pose. It went on to be used as a component in video-edit memes.

• Setting a far simpler method next to a convoluted one for comparison
• Wordless rebuttal to overpackaged claims and advertising
• Substituting a single image for a criticism that would be awkward to say out loud
• Reacting to someone's obvious mistake without saying anything at all
