Goat Talking

Origin

"Goat Talking" is catalogued more fully as "Rambling Goat and Huh? Cat / Goat Cat Huh?" It splices together two animal videos filmed a decade apart: one party rambles at length in sounds no one can parse, and the other answers with a bewildered "Huh?"

The first half is a goat video uploaded on April 24th, 2013 by YouTube user @ResQnSav, in which the goat produces a long stream of noises that sound uncannily like speech. Over the following decade it passed 2 million views and 16,000 likes.

The second half is the so-called "Huh? Cat." It comes from TikTok user @planetvenus500, who posts videos of a chubby cat named Ben; in the clip, uploaded on August 10th, 2023, the cat meowing for food sounds exactly like someone asking "Huh?" The video drew more than 541,000 plays and 31,000 likes in two months.

Spread

The earliest known post combining the two is an October 7th, 2023 TikTok by user @vivi000.o. The meme, in other words, involved no new footage at all — it was made purely by editing two existing clips together.

Simple as the structure is, it accommodated almost anything. Caption the goat half with a long-winded explanation and the cat half with total incomprehension, and it fits any situation. Recurring pairings include a student lost in a math class, a new hire being briefed on the job, and someone who asked a question and got an answer full of jargon.

Variations

The "Huh? Cat" broke off and became a reaction clip in its own right. Cutting just that segment to signal that you did not understand a word became standard, and posts using the cat without the goat are now far more common. The goat clip, conversely, occupies the slot for incomprehensible rambling itself.
