Origin

The line comes from Fake Men (가짜사나이), a web variety series released on the YouTube channel Physical Gallery on June 30th, 2020. Ordinary participants underwent special-forces-style training, and a rebuke thrown at one of them by Lee Geun, serving as an instructor, became a catchphrase verbatim.

The scene is in episode 1. The participant Kkwadduroop spat during training, and Lee Geun snapped at him: "Is there something wrong with your character?" Kkwadduroop explained that he was not being defiant — he had sand in his mouth. Once it was clear the whole thing stemmed from a trivial misunderstanding, the line was consumed as comedy rather than intimidation.

Spread

The show itself spread fast. According to an August 14th, 2020 report in the Korea Economic Daily, Fake Men had been watched by 2.4 million people within two months of release, and this line was singled out as its signature catchphrase.

The series generated several catchphrases. A July 2020 roundup by Topstarnews collected lines such as "Are you abandoning your team?", "Do you want to show off your backside?" and "Even my grandmother would be faster than that." Each episode, in effect, produced one short, forceful line out of the training setup.

This one outlasted the rest because it was easy to adapt. Swap in a different noun for "character" and it becomes a different criticism entirely: "Is there something wrong with your sense of taste?", "…with your intelligence?" That substitution took hold in community posts and in-game chat.
