Epic Sax Guy

Origin

"Epic Sax Guy" comes from the stage of the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, Norway. While the Moldovan entry SunStroke Project performed "Run Away," saxophonist Sergey Stepanov stepped forward to play a solo, working his own peculiar shuffle as he did. The performance itself did not do well — 22nd out of the 26 finalists — but what survived online was not the placing, it was those few seconds of solo. What drew attention was less the playing than the picture: sunglasses, a suit, an entirely serious face, a short repeating riff, and a body rocking on the beat, so that the whole thing already looked like a loop. A YouTube clip cut down to just the solo spread, and the name "Epic Sax Guy" stuck.

Spread

Repetition is the meme's basic form. Remixes splicing the solo into an endless loop poured out, including a ten-hour version. Because the riff is short and self-contained, it can be repeated indefinitely without seams — ideal raw material. A prank of disguising links so they open this video instead emerged too, called "Sax-rolling," structurally identical to Rickrolling.

Official recognition followed. In 2014 the 2010 performance was included in the Eurovision Book of Records, a collection of the contest's most memorable moments. When SunStroke Project returned to Eurovision in 2017 with "Hey, Mamma!" and placed third, the meme revived alongside them, and the new solo was dubbed "Ultra Sax Guy" as fresh remixes appeared.
