It starts with a speech given on May 10th, 2023 by Kamala Harris, then Vice President, at a swearing-in ceremony for commissioners of a White House initiative on expanding educational opportunity for Hispanic and Latino Americans. Quoting something her mother often said, Harris asked, "You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" and continued: "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."

The clip was put online that same day not by supporters but by opponents: the Republican-aligned YouTube account GOP War Room posted the speech footage, and at first it circulated as mockery, stripped of context. The joke was the abrupt coconut-tree metaphor and the distinctive laugh that follows it.

For more than a year the clip stayed nothing but a punchline — and then, in mid-2024, its polarity flipped. The decisive moment was July 21st, 2024, the day President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection and endorsed Harris. Coconut and palm tree references multiplied exponentially from that day, with a post by Colorado Governor Jared Polis cited among the earliest viral instances.

What distinguishes this meme is that the notation itself became a badge. Per Know Your Meme's account, the 🥥🌴 emoji pairing came to mark Harris supporters online during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, and the slang term "coconut-pilled" derived from it. A clip the opposing camp had circulated to ridicule her was taken over wholesale by supporters and converted into an identity marker.
