Otsukare Summer

Origin

"Otsukare Summer" (おつかれSUMMER) is a song by the Japanese hip-hop duo Halcali, and by extension the name for the short-form videos set to it. The title is a pun: the Japanese pronunciation of "Summer" overlaps with the tail of otsukaresama, the everyday phrase for "thank you for your hard work," so the title reads as both "good job, summer" and "thanks for your work" at once.

The track is not new. It is the fifth song on Halcali Bacon, the duo's debut album released by For Life Music on 3 September 2003 — an album that reached number five on the Oricon chart and stayed there for 21 weeks, without this particular track ever standing out.

Spread

The revival came 22 years later, in spring 2025. A song averaging around 2,000 daily Spotify plays passed 10,000 on 25 April, 40,000 on 28 April and reached 148,000 by 9 May, with more than 38,000 TikTok posts by that date. The spark came from the international TikTok, not from Japan, and spread partly through Roblox-adjacent memes. The label answered by publishing Halcali's older music videos on 10 May 2025.

It grew again over the summer. A For Life Music Entertainment release dated 8 August 2025 put cumulative TikTok plays past 1.6 billion, noted the song's first entry on the Spotify Viral 50 – Global chart on 26 July, and counted 35 countries charting it simultaneously as of 3 August. A data analysis published by Real Sound on 26 May 2026 puts cumulative TikTok plays above 6.5 billion as of 2025 and simultaneous viral-chart entries in up to 44 countries; the same piece notes that comments foreshadowing the spread appear on TikTok as early as March 2023, and that Kazakhstan is the most common first-charting country for cross-border viral tracks, at 25.9%.
