"Line 1 Jarvan, 84" is the nickname given to an elderly passenger spotted on Seoul Subway Line 1. His outfit — a military-style uniform loaded with gold trim and epaulettes — reminded people of Jarvan IV from League of Legends, so they turned "IV" into "84."
Photos and clips circulated on large Korean communities such as DCInside, FMKorea and Ruliweb from the late 2010s. Line 1 runs long and carries an unusually wide mix of riders, and "Line 1 villain" sightings became a genre of their own; Jarvan 84 became its best-known figure. No original photographer or first post has been identified — it spread from the start as a re-uploaded image.
The reversal
What had been a plain mockery meme changed tone in 2022. A June 2nd, 2022 Clien post titled "The truth about the Line 1 Jarvan 84 grandfather" and similar write-ups spread the claim that the man had been commended for community service and for reporting a crime, and that he had joined the 2016 impeachment candlelight rallies. Comment sections filled with apologies: "I laughed along too — I'm sorry."
But the "truth" posts were not fully verified either. A fact-check thread on Dogdrip found that a commendation he received for reporting a hit-and-run while working as a taxi driver checks out, while the claims that he descends from independence activists or belonged to the first Marine Corps class do not. Both the mockers and the people flipping it into an uplifting story added material they could not support — which is why this meme gets cited as a case study in how communities consume one person's story.
