Roll Safe

Origin

‘Roll Safe’ is a photograph of a grinning man tapping his temple with his index finger. He is the British actor Kayode Ewumi, and the character he plays — Reece Simpson, nicknamed Roll Safe — is a deluded aspiring rapper who fancies himself a street philosopher.

The character began on Vine in 2015, in short clips Ewumi improvised with his university friend and co-writer Tyrell Williams, and grew into the web series #HoodDocumentary. The scene that became the meme comes from an instalment uploaded to the BBC Three YouTube channel on June 1st, 2016: Reece, saying of a woman that she has a good head on her, points a finger at his own.

Spread

The screenshot hardened into a meme in late January 2017, when Twitter users began captioning it with life advice that sounds clever and collapses on inspection. The standard construction became ‘You can’t X if there is no Y’ — the classic example being ‘you can’t be broke if you never check your bank balance’.

It spread first through Black Twitter, then to Reddit, and settled internationally, turning up in everything from political commentary to everyday jokes. The practical condition for that reach was that tapping one’s temple reads as ‘using your head’ in almost any culture.

Usage

Sophistry of the form ‘if you never do A, you can never have problem B’
Advice that sounds like self-improvement but is really avoidance
An image attached to a scene of someone rationalising an absurd decision

The point is that the proposition is formally true. The laugh comes from its being technically correct and completely useless, which is why the meme does not work if you attach it to any old boast.
