Why are you there?

Origin

“Hyung, why are you coming out of there?” (형이 왜 거기서 나와) began as an on-screen caption in the “Giant of Temptation” special of MBC’s variety show Infinite Challenge, broadcast on 13 December 2014. The segment was a hidden-camera test of whether the cast actually kept their promise not to drink the night before a shoot. With the show’s tenth anniversary approaching, the producers framed it as an audit of the members’ self-discipline and cast the former basketball player turned entertainer Seo Jang-hoon as the “giant of temptation,” sending him to lure the members into drinking sessions over three weeks.

In weeks one and two, Park Myung-soo, Jung Jun-ha and Haha all refused. In week three Seo Jang-hoon and Jung Jun-ha pushed harder together, and Jung Hyung-don — who had driven up alone from Daegu after a regional shoot — finally accepted a glass, with Park Myung-soo and Haha following. Only Jung Jun-ha held out to the end and was named the model member. Once the drinking was under way, Yoo Jae-suk appeared and revealed the hidden camera, and the caption “형이 왜 거기서 나와” was laid over Jung Hyung-don’s startled face. What became a meme was the caption line rather than anything Jung actually said.

Spread and variants

The line survived because what stuck was the sentence pattern, not the scene. Any subject can be swapped into the “hyung” slot while “why are you coming out of there” stays fixed, and the meaning — “I ran into you somewhere you had no business being” — falls out automatically. Online it spread as “누나가 왜 거기서 나와” (noona), “얘가 왜 거기서 나와” (this kid) and countless other subjects, and eventually attached to objects, brands and game items rather than people.

Its usage also drifted away from the “caught red-handed” framing of the broadcast. In the original the surprised party was the one being caught; today the phrase is usually spoken by the one doing the spotting. In effect the speaker moved out of Yoo Jae-suk’s position and into the viewer’s seat outside the camera — a typical case of a variety-show caption changing point of view once it crosses into community forums.

How it is used

It points at something that turned up without warning. The tone mixes surprise with mild delight or disbelief, so it rarely works as pure criticism.
