Nanalan It's Okay Birdy

Origin

"It's Okay Birdy" comes from a scene in the Canadian children's puppet show Nanalan'. The episode is "Under My Wing," which aired on September 3rd, 2004.

The premise is simple. The main character, Mona, ends up caring for an injured baby bird and soothes the frightened animal with "Hey birdy, it's okay birdy." In the original it is nothing more than a gentle comforting scene pitched at small children — not written to be funny.

The scene resurfaced nineteen years after it aired. On September 26th, 2023 the official Nanalan' TikTok account posted the clip, and it drew 2.9 million views and 339,000 likes in two and a half months.

The meme proper came at the next stage. From late November 2023, edits began laying the clip over unrelated footage. On November 19th, a video by user @amressefarrow drew over 900 likes in three weeks; two days later, on the 21st, an edit by mylittle_mnelli passed 12 million views and 2.7 million likes over the same span and broke the format wide open. From that point the clip functioned as a sound.

How It's Used

Usage follows a consistent pattern: caption a moment where you are falling apart, then lay the comforting scene over it. The joke comes from the gap between the sincerity of the original and the pettiness of whatever the caption describes.
