Origin

The meme comes from the third round team battle on Netflix's cooking survival show Culinary Class Wars. As teams were being split, chef Edward Lee hurriedly blurted "fi… fish" in Korean, picking the fish team. As a Korean American whose Korean is not fluent, rushing the word left the pronunciation mangled, and that clumsiness against his entirely serious expression is what made it funny.

What made it stick is that the pick worked out well. Viewers turned it into praise — a world-class chef whose "disaster detector" runs on a different frequency, the single best survival read, peak judgment. A garbled syllable was consumed as evidence of foresight.

The twist

That reading was later overturned by the man himself. Appearing on the American podcast The Dave Chang Show, Edward Lee explained that he ended up with fish because of an error in interpretation. The moment viewers had been calling judgment was not strategic calculation but a communication accident.

The meme did not weaken after the clarification. If anything it gained a second act, as the deliberate masterstroke became an accidental one.

How it is used

  • Shouting "fish" in imitation when forced to pick between two options on the spot.
  • Describing a snap decision that happened to turn out well.
  • Self-deprecation about a moment when your words tangled and came out slurred.
  • Paired with "detector" phrasing for instinctively dodging the option you should have dodged.
