A Glass of Bleach

Origin

"A glass of bleach" (락스 한 잔) is a joke that took shape in Korean community comment sections in the first half of 2024. It began closer to a throwing-in-the-towel gag for hopeless situations, then settled into its current use once people started posting it under things they envied. The earliest surviving example is a comment reading "A glass of bleach — shaken, not stirred" left under an April 5, 2024 post on FMKorea. It lifts James Bond's martini order wholesale and swaps only the drink for household bleach.

The humor lives in the gap between register and contents. The speaker keeps the cadence of ordering whisky on the rocks at a bar while substituting something no one may drink, which exaggerates just how despairing — or jealous — they are. Nobody is announcing an intention to drink anything; it is a substitute for "I'm dying of envy."

Spread

The joke widened considerably in the second half of 2024. On the Honkai: Star Rail channel of Arca.live it fused with image edits involving the character Xiangyi, and posts about the meme spiked sharply from early October that year. Around this point it stopped being purely a sentence: edits that composite bleach bottles into liquor and beverage advertising became a standard form. Waiter-themed creations asking "Would you care for a glass of bleach?" circulate for the same reason.

It also traveled alongside other envy jokes of the period. "Pay more taxes" is the best known, though the two point in opposite directions — that one concedes the other person's success with a jab, while "a glass of bleach" has the speaker collapsing instead.

How it's used

Its home is the comment section under someone else's relationship, flex, or success post. What matters is less the sentence than how convincingly the bar-order cadence is imitated, so variants keep appearing.

Under couple photos or wedding news — "A glass of bleach, on the rocks"
Under salary, apartment, or grade bragging — "Pour me a cold glass of bleach"
Keeping the full bartender routine — "Bartender, a glass of bleach. Shaken, not stirred"
As a clipped sign of resignation — "Now where did I put the bleach"

For the record, bleach (sodium hypochlorite) causes severe injury to the esophagus and stomach lining if swallowed. The joke works precisely because that danger is common knowledge, and it is only ever used as wordplay.
