Hambugi On & On

Origin

"Haembugi on and on" comes from a sentence in which the Korean word for hamburger mutates over and over and keeps accreting. The full form runs roughly: "Haembugi-haembuk haembugeo haembukseuttaggseu Hamburg-haembugauga haembigi-haembugeo haembugati-haembugi-on-and-on — bring it to me." Hamburg, ooga-booga and Bugatti all tumbled in because they sound alike; the string means nothing.

The starting point was chatter rather than a meme. In the summer of 2024, someone posted to a Korean community that they were annoyed because a friend kept calling hamburgers "haembugi". Context-free images then attached themselves — an armored knight standing outside a burger joint, a bewildered part-timer, a horse with a heart on its forehead — and the sentence kept growing.

Spread

The decisive turn was recitation. The meme snapped into place once people started reading the line in a solemn historical-drama voice, in one breath, without ever cracking a smile. Trend Award noted that it spread on X under the heading "a way to beat depression and lethargy," and that the whole point is holding the serious tone. The difficulty of not laughing became the content.

It then turned into a challenge. A clip of the actor Shin Ye-eun attempting it drew attention, and singers including Roy Kim and WayV's Ten performed the line at fan meetings and on live broadcasts. Fans began flooding chat asking idols to "do the haembugi," pushing it through fandom a second time.
