Bought on TEMU

Origin

"Bought on TEMU" comes from the accumulated experience of ordering from TEMU, the Chinese ultra-cheap shopping platform, and receiving something that looks nothing like the listing photo. The sensation — you paid little, you got something roughly similar but visibly worse — turned straight into a figure of speech.

Which is why the phrase works best on people rather than objects. Anyone who resembles a celebrity but falls short in some decisive way gets called "the TEMU version of ___." The newsletter Soso Letter cited "TEMU Son Suk-ku" as the signature example. It is the latest iteration of an older family of Korean jokes about people who "unfortunately resemble" someone famous.

Spread

It spread from summer 2024 on TikTok, Instagram Reels and X; the Trend A Word newsletter documented it as an active trend as of August 2024. By September 11th of that year, Digital Daily was using the meme in the headline of a reporting column — a fair sign of how mainstream it had gone.

The variation rules are the fun part. If the resemblance is better than expected, the store gets upgraded — "bought at a department store," "bought on Coupang." If it is far too weak, commenters reply that "even TEMU doesn't sell that." In other words, degree of resemblance gets priced. Modifiers like "dropped a few times" or "returned" appeared as well.

The Digital Daily column noted that distrust of Chinese-made goods sits underneath the humor, while arguing that the real competitiveness of Chinese appliances and smartphones is no longer a laughing matter. The meme reflects a consumer instinct — and the gap between that instinct and the market.
