Origin

"Teya teya galteya" is a meme in which people chant where they want to go or what they want to do in a nursery-rhyme cadence, as in "galteya teya, I'll go to ___" or "I'll go, I'll go, I'll go to ___." It is usually used with self-mocking cuteness in bittersweet situations where you badly want something that isn't realistically within reach.

Its prototype is an old internet story. According to a 2025 Kyeonggi Ilbo report, the meme comes from a story posted on Naver's Q&A service Knowledge-in: a friend who applied a notoriously painful mouth-ulcer medication couldn't stand the pain and kept crying out, "I'll go to the pond," and this bizarre story spread widely through parodies. The trend newsletter Trend A Word says the story came from a 2007 Naver Knowledge-in Q&A.

About 18 years later, in August 2025, the old image caught fire again on X (formerly Twitter). Posts expressing the longing to go to concerts led the trend, and on August 26, 2025 the meme account @wannabeMZ also posted an image captioned "galteya teya, I'll go to the concert." It fit perfectly for voicing longing for something you want but can't easily reach, like wanting to see your favorite idol's concert but being stuck with exams or other plans.

Its use then broadened beyond concerts. It was varied into forms like "galteya teya," "I'll go, I'll go" and "me, me, I'll go" for whenever you want to go anywhere, miss someone or are simply delighted. It also made its way into institutional and brand promotion, as when a Seoul city sports campaign account encouraged exercise with "galteya teya, today I'll definitely go." In October 2025, Kyeonggi Ilbo introduced it as Gen Z speech that narrows the generation gap, with an example like peering into a wallet while saying "galteya teya, I'll go give some pocket money," noting it can be a conversation topic for sharing laughs instead of formal questions.

Usage

• Filling in a destination to express longing, as in "galteya teya, I'll go to the concert"
• Self-mockery about harsh reality: "I'll go, I'll go, I'll go to my bed"
• A friendly call to action in brand or public campaign copy: "today I'll definitely go"
