Origin

"Nyanyanyang" is a cat-meow-like interjection shouted when someone stops a story midway, meaning "I'm dying to know what happens next, tell me." Posts or comments that say "If you want to know what comes next, type 'nyanyanyang!!!'" set off a participatory game in which curious readers leave strings of "nyanyanyang!!!"

It traces back to a screenshot of a KakaoTalk conversation that circulated online around 2023. In a family chat, one person starts to reveal something suspicious they discovered, stops short and says to type "nyanyanyang!!!" to hear the rest, and the other person obediently replies "nyanyanyang!!!" Outlets that introduced the screenshot describe the people and backstory in the chat slightly differently, but they agree that the humor lies in the dutiful compliance with an absurd request and in the itch people feel when a story is left unfinished. The trend newsletter Trend A Word summed it up as "what Koreans hate most is when someone stops talking midway."

Spread

After a quiet stretch, the expression spread widely again on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram in March 2026. By early March 2026, comment sections were so full of "nyanyanyang" that one X user posted asking what the meme was and why people were suddenly turning into cats. Wepick Letter broke the meme's structure into three parts: a teaser of partial information, a rule that you must comment "nyanyanyang!!!", and an AI-notice style of phrasing added for extra laughs.

Behavioral economist George Loewenstein's information gap theory was cited to explain its appeal: the urge to fill the gap between what we know and what we don't naturally turns into comments. As commenting itself became a game, people split into rule followers, "rebels" who swap in other animal sounds such as a dog's "wal wal wal" or a rabbit's "myong myong myong," and enthusiasts who spam the comment section. Entertainment accounts such as the music show Show Champion quickly borrowed the format to tease behind-the-scenes content.
