Origin
"Igwoggwodeon" (이궈궈던) is a phonetic spelling of "igeogeodeun" ("this is it") as shouted on stream by Segeulja, a leading MapleStory influencer, in his distinctive pronunciation. Segeulja would naturally shout "igwoggwodeon" whenever he completed an item or accomplished something, and his peculiar delivery left such an impression on viewers that it spread throughout the MapleStory community.
The phrase has no clear starting point. Speaking to Gametoc in July 2023, Segeulja explained, "There was no particular trigger. I didn't use it consciously. It was just something I said out of habit." The fact that it was an unintentional verbal tic, and a short line anyone could easily shout, ended up fueling its popularity.
Spread
The trend took off in summer 2023. MapleStory's "New Age" summer update pushed the game's popularity to a peak, with its PC bang (internet cafe) share passing 12%, and as more people played, "igwoggwodeon" rose in popularity too. Even streamers newly drawn in after the summer update began using it. According to Gametoc, the Nexon MapleStory director mentioned knowing the phrase during a June 10 broadcast, showing it had become a catchphrase recognized by the developer as well.
Usage
- An exclamation when cubes or enhancements give the result you wanted
