The construction attaches "K-" to anything Korean. It starts with K-pop. According to Namuwiki's account, as K-pop broke out globally in the second half of the 2010s, the same prefix began to be attached to Korean products, phenomena and behaviors generally.
What fixed it as an idiom was 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Korean government's response drew favorable international attention and the term "K-quarantine" acquired symbolic weight; from there the prefix was applied enthusiastically to every field showing results — K-beauty, K-food, K-webtoon. The early K-, in other words, was a badge of pride.
Spread
Overuse produced a backlash. As media outlets, public institutions and politicians attached "our proud K-something" to any field at all, the phrasing came to feel forced — which is why Namuwiki discusses it alongside its entry on manufactured memes.
Then the prefix inverted. It began to be used not as a boast but as a self-deprecating marker for the more suffocating conventions of Korean society. The clearest case is "K-eldest daughter," which spread on Korean online communities in the 2020s to name the family burdens borne by first-born daughters, and drew coverage such as the Sookmyung Times feature "K-eldest daughters are people, not household capital."
Both usages now run in parallel. The same prefix attaches to a boast like "K-beauty" and to a resigned complaint like "K-company dinner" or "K-nagging." That you cannot tell praise from sarcasm without context is precisely what characterizes this meme.
