NewJeans' Hype Boy Yo

Origin

The meme rests on a Korean street-interview format: "What song are you listening to right now?" A creator approaches a pedestrian wearing earphones, asks what they are playing, briefly plays that song, and moves on. According to a January 30th, 2023 report in the Kyunghyang Shinmun, the format spread as location-specific series — Noryangjin Station, Hongdae, subway line 1, gyms, university campuses — and took hold fast: the channel Wasong, launched in August 2022, gathered 115,000 subscribers within six months.

With NewJeans' "Hype Boy" everywhere in 2022, answers of "NewJeans' Hype Boy" kept recurring in these videos. One clip went further — the respondent not only named the song but performed the Hype Boy choreography on the spot — and after it was posted to Instagram Reels it spread explosively and became the meme. That clip, reportedly filmed near Taereung Ipgu station, is generally treated as the original, though it has since been deleted.

Spread

As it hardened into a meme, the format twisted once more. The original premise was answering a question; the meme version has someone volunteer "Oh, excuse me — NewJeans' Hype Boy" with no question asked, and dance. With the question gone and only the answer left, it could be inserted anywhere regardless of context.

NewJeans themselves fed the spread. Per the Kyunghyang report, member Minji re-enacted the meme on a music show, and that moment circulated as a short clip in turn — so the meme looped back into promotion for the song it came from.

The street-interview format grew alongside it. The same article notes that the channel Bokcos reached 56,600 subscribers, several universities adopted the format on their official YouTube channels, and it was built out into web variety shows featuring comedians such as Kim Yong-myeong.
