Bath Song

Origin

‘The Bath Song’ refers to the Chinese children’s song ‘Xǐ Zǎo Gē’ (洗澡歌). It was made by the Chinese children’s animation studio Hoop Kids (圈圈兒童) as educational content walking a child through the steps of taking a bath: getting the water temperature right, working up a lather, washing each part in turn.

It was not, in other words, written to be a meme. A song made for small children happened to have a short, repetitive structure that suited short-form editing, and became one.

Spread

It began drawing attention on Instagram Reels around February 2024 and spread from there to YouTube. Animal videos, cats above all, were at the centre of it. Cutting footage of an animal being washed, or simply moving, to the song’s beat became the standard treatment, and the track was consumed as an animal dance song entirely divorced from its educational context.

That most users do not speak Chinese helped rather than hindered. Since the beat and the repetition carry it without the words, it crossed into other language regions readily, and translated and subtitled versions were made alongside the original.

Usage

• Backing audio for videos of a pet being washed
• Edits repeating an action in time with the beat
• A reflexive audio choice for anything involving bathing or washing

Because the source is a children’s educational song there is nothing objectionable in the lyric, and the melody is simple enough to lay over any footage — which is why it has lasted.
