Origin

"Yunjeong-a, Yunjeong-a, wae-yo ssaem" is a challenge meme built on a short skit: one person calls out "Yunjeong-a, Yunjeong-a~" and the other answers "Wae-yo ssaem, wae-yo ssaem~" ("What is it, teacher?"), in a listless voice with a slow, swaying dance. They go on to trade lines like "Didn't I tell you not to eat in the piano room?" and "Sorry, teacher," acting out a scene from a neighborhood piano academy. It's also called the "Yunjeong challenge."

The meme traces back to YouTube content by comedian Jung Yi-rang, whose "Chopin Piano Academy" series recreates the feel of early-2000s neighborhood hagwons and features a student character named Seo Yun-jeong. Inspired by it, elementary school student Kim Ji-yun (@j1_xun3) posted an Instagram Reel of herself and a friend copying the skit in early January 2026, and that video launched the challenge. The deadpan dance, on the beat yet seemingly soulless, was exactly what made people laugh.

Thanks to its short, repetitive lines, the challenge spread in no time. The turning point was actress Go Youn-jung, who shares the name Yunjeong, joining in: she drew attention with a couple's version alongside her drama co-star Kim Seon-ho, and volleyball players filmed a version featuring teammate Lee Yun-jeong of the Korea Expressway Corporation team. Ledesk noted that the challenge taps into nostalgia for early-2000s hagwon life, and viewers said the short lyrics and repetitive rhythm got stuck in their heads. Gogumafarm listed it first in its roundup of the latest memes for January 2026.

Explanations for its appeal followed. Wepick Letter suggested that the listless dance mirrors a common modern state, "the soul has clocked out but the body is still working," and that meaningless content offers relief in a culture that demands productivity. It added that because the structure only requires swapping names and titles, brand accounts can easily use the template "(Name)-a, (Name)-a~ wae-yo (title), wae-yo (title)~" for new menu items or discount news.
