Origin

The clip is from Michael Jackson's HIStory World Tour concert in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 14th, 1997. During "Earth Song," an actor dressed as a soldier points a gun at Jackson onstage; rather than reacting with anger or backing away, Jackson places his hand on the weapon and slowly lowers it — a staged gesture standing for an end to war.

What made it a meme is the nature of the gesture. He calms the other party with a single movement, without words and without force, so the meaning reads as "stand down" even to someone who knows nothing of the original context. Few reaction clips are that economical.

It was unearthed more than two decades after the concert. Per Know Your Meme's account, in August 2020 the YouTuber ZahidMJ uploaded remastered clips of the concert broadcast; the segment posted on August 17th showing the gun being lowered accumulated roughly 227,500 views and 6,100 likes over three years.

The real spread came through short-form platforms.

• December 23rd, 2022 — TikTok user @longliveroyalty posted the clip, reaching 11.3 million plays and 1.8 million likes in four months
• January 14th, 2023 — Twitter user @DrewSkywalker used it as a reaction telling someone to calm down, drawing 10.2 million video views
• March 4th, 2023 — Twitter user @aaroncabrera_ posted it tagging the NBA player Ja Morant amid a firearms controversy, drawing 181,900 likes; this post catalyzed its wider adoption

Usage converged on de-escalation. The clip gets attached to overheated arguments, impulse spending, seasonal mood swings — anything running hot — as a way of saying enough.
