Dancing Wolf

Origin

The dancing wolf video first appeared online on January 9, 2021, uploaded to YouTube by the user @greenscreen8922. It showed a low-resolution 3D wolf model dancing, set to an electronic remix of "Teşkilat Türküsü" by the Turkish singer Mevlütcan Kaplan.

Over the next two years that video managed 220 views and 8 likes. Every ingredient of the meme was already in place; nobody was watching.

Spread

It caught fire in late November 2023. On November 28, the TikTok user @mazur4ik_ posted a recreation of the same wolf dance set to the German track "Komm Tanzen – Ich will Nicht," and that video passed 13 million plays and 3 million likes within three months. Two days later, on November 30, @musatovnikita posted another recreation that drew over 3.6 million likes in a comparable window.

The thing worth noting is that the music changed. The moment the Turkish audio was swapped for German electronic music, the meme detonated. Same 3D animation, one different backing track, and a video nobody had watched became a global trend. From there it spread into people copying the wolf's moves themselves and compositing it onto other footage with green screen.
