Origin

The meme began as a Twitch emote using the face of Canadian streamer xQc. On October 5, 2021, a user named WILLIAMSHAKESPARE uploaded it to BetterTTV as xqcDespair.

The emote is a grayscale image of xQc wearing a solemn, blank expression, with a heavy black outline around the figure. That thick outline is what makes the expression read as heavier than it otherwise would. The upload and subsequent spread are documented with dates on Know Your Meme.

The emotion it conveys is being frozen by shock. In English-speaking communities it is often described as a moving counterpart to the Traumatized Mr. Incredible format, which captures the same feeling.

The decisive turn came on January 29, 2022. A user named DefinitelyEnder spliced the static xqcDespair emote onto a short clip of xQc laughing, producing a GIF in which laughter abruptly gives way to a hardened stare, and uploaded it to Tenor.

That edit changed what the meme was. Where it had been a single grim expression, the contrast from laughter to blankness gave it a narrative: someone was enjoying themselves, realized something, and froze. This GIF version carried the meme beyond Twitch onto other social platforms, and it is the GIF form that predominates in Korea.

Usage

It is used when a lighthearted moment gives way to a sudden realization of how serious things are. The transition itself is the message, so it lands only when there is a casual setup in front of it.
