Origin

"Nabi-bo-bet-tta-u" is a Korean phonetic transcription of a passage from "K.K. House," a song performed by K.K. Slider, the traveling musician character in Nintendo's Animal Crossing series. The series' songs are sung not in any real language but in the games' distinctive synthesized gibberish, so the lyrics carry no meaning and every listener can write down something different. The transcription did not first appear under a gameplay video. It is understood to have started in a comment on a video by the Korean YouTuber Sunshot, who spent 24 hours holding out in a club; by its date the comment is estimated to have been written around May 2019. Someone who knew the original song had recognized it in the background audio and written down what they heard — and a few months later that comment suddenly began to spread.

Spread

The spread centered on Twitter and other social platforms. As a meaningless string of syllables it suited being dropped into a conversation with no context at all, and it moved fast because the Animal Crossing player base overlapped with the crowd that enjoys that kind of nonsense posting. The song had been a deep cut even among series fans; giving it the name "nabibobettau" reversed that, making the track itself famous.

When Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrived in 2020 and the series' popularity surged, the phrase became better known alongside it. Derivative content followed — one-hour loop videos, videos writing the "lyrics" out in chemical element symbols — and as guitar chords circulated, people began playing it themselves. In many cases the string of syllables reached people who had never touched the game at all.
