Origin
"I'm thirty-two years old" comes from a press conference given in 2000 by Park Joon-hyung, a member of the group god. His relationship with an actress had become public, and his agency was using it as grounds to push him out of the group. In the Korean entertainment industry of that era, a dating report about an idol was treated as potentially career-ending.
At the conference, in tears, he said: "I'm thirty-two years old. OK? At thirty-two you ought to have a girlfriend." It was not a joke — it was a defense mounted with his career on the line, and public opinion did in fact turn in his favor afterward. Years later, in a July 22nd, 2017 interview with Hankook Ilbo, he recalled that the tears came from sheer indignation.
Becoming a Meme
As the line was quoted and requoted online, nearly all of that context fell away. What remains is a rhetorical move: asserting something confidently on the grounds of your age. People who know nothing about the agency dispute or the era's reporting norms borrow the sentence anyway — which is precisely why it has lasted. It works without the original incident.
It comes back around every January in particular. People who have just turned thirty-two post the line as a self-introduction, so more than two decades after the event, it trends once a year on schedule.
How It's Used
- Introducing yourself, half self-mockingly, in the year you turn thirty-two
- Claiming your choices are your own on the grounds of your age
- A retort when you're being treated as a kid
- Swapping the number: "I'm ___ years old"
