The Season of Full Paralysis

TL;DR · Origin"The season of full paralysis" is a pun that deliberately mangles cheon-go-ma-bi (天高馬肥, "the sky is high and horses grow fat"), the four-character idiom Koreans use for autum

Origin

"The season of full paralysis" is a pun that deliberately mangles cheon-go-ma-bi (天高馬肥, "the sky is high and horses grow fat"), the four-character idiom Koreans use for autumn, into jeon-sin-ma-bi, "total paralysis." Swapping two similar-sounding words is ordinary wordplay; what makes this meme distinctive is what happens after someone corrects you.

The fixed form runs like this. The speaker says "it's the season of full paralysis." The listener corrects them: "don't you mean cheon-go-ma-bi?" The speaker does not back down — "No, full paralysis is right" — and then strikes the listener over the head with whatever they are holding, producing actual paralysis. The piece ends on a single line: "It was autumn."

That closing line comes from a separate meme. "It was summer," which began on Korean Twitter in 2019, is the joke that any string of nonsense suddenly sounds literary if you end it with those words. "The season of full paralysis" swapped in autumn and borrowed the device; the gap between the violent narration and the lyrical last line is where the humor sits.

Spread

The format reached Korean communities around October 2022. On October 18th, 2022 a Clien humor post about "it was autumn" already drew a comment quoting the line, and around the same period the "it's the season of full paralysis, professor" version appeared repeatedly on Ppomppu, Dogdrip, Ruliweb and Daum cafes. No original author has been identified; it spread as several near-identical versions circulating at once.

The best-known version is the student-and-professor exchange, but the structure works with any two characters swapped in, so variants keep appearing. A version posted to X on July 30th, 2025 has Loki say the line to Odin and strike him with his scepter, and there are applications like calling the busy season for cosmetic surgery "the season of full paralysis." It is also seasonal: it resurfaces every autumn.

Usage

  • As a greeting-replacement joke when autumn begins
  • As a trap for the person who corrects you — the correction is the setup
  • As a writing game: end any exchange violently, then seal it with "it was autumn"
  • As self-mockery about feeling heavy and listless once autumn arrives
