"Sam-Taemin" (삼태민, literally "three Taemins") refers to the act of calling the name of SHINee member Taemin (born Lee Tae-min) three times in a row, and to the chant itself. It is used as a kind of charm: say the name three times and your wish comes true.
It began as a fandom anecdote. The story that a fan chanted "Lee Tae-min" three times and then got what they wanted spread through the fandom, and calling the name three times before attempting something became customary. No record identifies the first post or the date, however; the origin is essentially oral tradition, and questions about where it came from still recur on fan boards.
Taemin's own image is bound up in it. The chant was made by fans for an idol famously plagued by bad luck, and the paradox — that the unluckiest name is the one invoked for other people's luck — is the heart of the joke.
Spread
The decisive moment for reaching outside the fandom came on television. According to a February 12th, 2019 report in Kyeongin Ilbo, Taemin appeared on the JTBC variety show Idol Room and explained the phrase himself: call "Lee Tae-min" three times and it comes true. Hosts Jeong Hyung-don and Defconn then chanted his name three times on the spot, wishing for better ratings for the show.
His agency embraced it officially as well. SM Entertainment released Sam-Taemin merchandise, including a phone case printed with a wish-granting magic lamp and a line describing Taemin as granting wishes in person. Taemin has said he first heard about the chant from his mother, and in an April 6th, 2016 interview with Soho he performed the chant himself.
Variations
The format is simple enough that it transferred directly to other fandoms, with fans chanting the name of their own favorite three times — BTS fans saying "Kim Nam-joon Kim Nam-joon Kim Nam-joon," for instance. "Sam-Taemin" is sometimes used as the name of the format itself rather than of the original chant.
Its timing is distinctive too. Usage clusters ahead of things whose outcome cannot be controlled — concert ticketing, exams — so that during ticketing seasons and exam periods, "Sam-Taemin" and "Lee Tae-min Lee Tae-min Lee Tae-min" reliably surface in Korean Twitter trends.
