"Hanjanhae" — "have a drink" — is an ordinary invitation, but as a meme it starts with football. In the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League semi-final, FC Barcelona lost to Bayern Munich 0–7 on aggregate. The trouble was the postmatch interview given by midfielder Xavi Hernández, whose gist was that Bayern had not controlled the game, that Barcelona had dominated possession, and that the result does not tell the whole truth of the story.
Arguing the merits of the performance on possession figures, in front of a 0–7 scoreline, read to Korean football communities as textbook cope. On DCInside's foreign football gallery, a macro appeared mocking the interview: a photo of Xavi holding a wine glass, captioned "have a drink — you played beautiful football." That is the meme's original form. Because it borrows the shape of consolation to deliver mockery, the sentence looks kind on its own and turns cruel the moment it is attached to something.
Revival
The meme sat dormant for years before internet broadcasting brought it back. The streamer Lalo used "have a drink" frequently on stream, bundled with lines like "you've got talent" and "you've got potential," spreading it to viewers with no interest in football. The original is from 2013 and the revival came a decade later, so a good share of people using it today have never heard of the Xavi interview.
Lalo's usage is blunted somewhat. It carries both teasing and comfort at once, so aimed at someone who has just failed it can land either as sarcasm or as a pat on the back.
