The character was drawn by Phillip Banks, an illustrator from North Carolina who goes by names such as "philb" online. The original is the artwork he posted to X on 4 October 2023.
It depicts a brown dog standing like a person, wearing a grey crew neck sweater, blue jeans and dirty red Converse, hands in pockets, one corner of the mouth raised in a smirk. The artist's own note said the character's whole deal was that he's a chill guy who lowkey doesn't care. Expression, posture and outfit are all aligned toward that one line.
The trend that arrived a year late
The drawing got some response on posting, but it did not explode as a meme until almost a year later, on 30 August 2024, when a TikTok user built slideshows pairing the character with other memes then in circulation.
That kind of lag is not unusual for character memes. The image was finished, but what to use it for had not been settled; the moment someone supplied a usage, the material was consumed all at once. TikTok creators then attached the drawing to any situation that suited an "I'm just a chill guy" posture, and the usage set.
The crypto controversy
A second surge came on 21 November 2024, and this one was different in kind. A memecoin called $CHILLGUY, created without the artist's involvement, climbed to a market capitalization of $580 million on Solana, and Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele promoting it added fuel.
Banks had never sanctioned any of it. He issued copyright notices and takedown requests against unauthorized merchandise and coins, stating that he does not and never will endorse crypto projects involving his work. Shortly afterward he was doxed, and he set his Twitter account to private.
A drawing about being unbothered ended up putting its author in the least chill position imaginable. The episode is frequently cited as a demonstration of how far the copyright in a meme character is protected in practice.
