Origin

"Lotte World's Streetlamp Gentleman" (가로등 신사, garodeung sinsa) is the nickname for Vesper, a streetlamp-headed character in the night parade "Dark Fantasy Festival" at Lotte World Adventure in Seoul, and the internet meme that grew up around him. The parade premiered on September 12, 2026 as part of the park's autumn festival "Invitation to a Mysterious World." It became a talking point after Lotte World posted a video of Vesper on its official X account on September 16. According to Etoday, Lotte World revealed the characters' names through its official account the same day and launched a fan art contest.

The parade is built on the premise that a door opens between our reality and another world, letting strange beings pass through. Performers with human bodies and object-shaped heads move to orchestral music. Vesper, who wears a formal suit and has a streetlamp for a head, became known as the "streetlamp gentleman," while Candra, who has a candelabra for a head, was dubbed the "candelabra lady." A rose-headed character also appears. A notable feature of the meme is that the nicknames coined by viewers spread before the official names were announced.

Spread

Newsquest reported that the X video posted on September 16 passed 10 million views within a single day and reached the top of X's real-time trends in Korea. According to Maeil Shinmun, the same post had exceeded 15.9 million views as of September 28. Visitors shared fancams, videos of themselves receiving high-fives or finger hearts from Vesper, and fan art in the form of paper crafts, plush toys and comics. Some fan art pieces were reported to have drawn millions of views and thousands of shares.

Along the way, the subculture term "inoe" (인외, literally "non-human") gained wider attention. Inoe refers to beings that are not human, especially characters without facial features such as eyes, a nose or a mouth; designs in which an object replaces the head are also called "object heads." In an interview with Maeil Shinmun, culture critic Ha Jae-geun said kidult culture is turning character consumption into a cultural meme, and that faceless characters feel fresh precisely because they are unconventional.

Usage and Derivatives

"Streetlamp gentleman" is used as an affectionate name for Vesper himself, but it has also expanded into a way of describing object-headed characters in general. Typical uses include:

  • Exaggerated parade reviews such as "Got a bow from the streetlamp gentleman and fainted"
  • Parodies that personify other objects in the form "___ gentleman" or "___ lady"
  • Phrases declaring one's taste in characters, such as "inoe taste" or "my inoe awakening"

HuffPost Korea reported that on September 28 the Jeonbuk 119 Safety Experience Center introduced a "fire extinguisher gentleman" with an extinguisher for a head. Lotte World, for its part, gradually released character profiles and everyday scenes on its official accounts, drawing fans' speculation into official canon, and the fan art contest accepted entries until October 1.
