Origin

"Bukang-i" is the nickname given to a shark that entered the waterway of Busan's North Port Waterside Park in September 2026. According to Kyunghyang Shinmun, the shark entered the canal in Dong-gu, Busan on September 18 and stayed for about ten days, with its dorsal fin visible above the surface. It was described as a tawny nurse shark.

The name combines "Bukhang" (North Port) with "hocance", the Korean word for a vacation spent at a hotel, and is understood to poke fun at how relaxed the animal looked in a city waterway. Some reports, including one by Segye Ilbo, give a different date for the arrival, so this entry follows the date in Kyunghyang Shinmun, which cites the authorities.

Usage

Bukang-i is both the nickname of the individual shark and a collective name for the fan works and merchandise built around it. Online it appears in phrases such as "let's go see Bukang-i" or "Bukang-i goods", and some companies and local government accounts borrowed it for marketing copy.

The meme centers on the subject rather than on a particular turn of phrase. Giving a name and a story to a wild animal that wandered into an urban harbor and treating it like a fictional character puts it in the same line as earlier animal memes. Voices also argued that, whatever the excitement, the shark's safe return should come first.

Spread and reaction

Visitor numbers show the scale. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported about 405,800 cumulative visitors between September 19 and 26, with 136,000 in a single day on September 25, during the Chuseok holiday. The site normally sees around 2,000 visitors a day, and officials had to restrict a pedestrian bridge and deploy 154 staff.

A YouTube news video noted that a game, merchandise and a comic had appeared. Dong-gu said over 90 percent approved in a social media vote and moved to appoint the shark an honorary ambassador and to hold a mascot contest. Busan city, the National Institute of Fisheries Science, the Busan Port Authority and the Coast Guard discussed returning the shark to open water, with a meeting scheduled for September 28. Environmental groups linked the appearance to climate change.

A meme coin using the name was issued on the Pump.fun platform on September 20. Segye Ilbo reported a market capitalization of about 1.26 million dollars (roughly 1.7 billion won) as of 2 p.m. on September 28, along with industry warnings about volatility. This entry is not investment advice and only records that the coin was issued.
