This meme is a fusion of a photo and a line that came from entirely different places. The line traces back to "Discoveries of Daily Life," a sketch on KBS's Gag Concert. The sketch ran the same structure repeatedly: one half of a couple brings up breaking up, and the other fires back with "why would you bring that up while I'm doing OO?" The joke was never the breakup but the mismatch of quibbling over its timing.

The photo has a completely separate source. It comes from a video by the Japanese YouTube channel Mizutamari Bond: in 2019, member Kanta rented an enormous sculpture of a wave of fried rice to stage a prank on his colleague. The resulting frame — a man stopping mid-stir over a wok of Chinese fried rice to glance sideways — was paired with the Gag Concert line to produce "why would you tell me you're breaking up with me while I'm frying rice?" Spread

It came into real use online around 2020. What enabled the spread is that only the back half of the sentence needs swapping: "while I'm working out," "while I'm gaming," "while I'm eating my fried chicken" — drop in whatever you personally get absorbed in and it becomes your own joke instantly.

The comic mechanism is inverted priorities. Reacting as though the moment of frying rice mattered more than being dumped paints the speaker as having completely misjudged the weight of events. The dead-serious expression on the man in the original photo widens that gap further.
