Origin
The line is from Bong Joon-ho's 2019 film Parasite. In full it runs, "Son, you really do have a plan," spoken by the father Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) to his son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik).
The context matters. It comes early in the film, as Ki-woo heads out to a tutoring interview carrying a forged university enrollment certificate. The "plan" the father marvels at, in other words, is document forgery. The comedy lies in the gap between the earnest, proud tone — as though the boy were off to do something admirable — and what is actually happening: a characteristic piece of Bong's black comedy.
The actor read it the same way. In a June 2019 interview with Nocut News, Song Kang-ho said the line struck him as "a stage line" or "a cartoon line," and that its purpose was less to immerse the audience than to hold them at a slight remove, watching.
Spread
The film's awards run carried the line outward. Parasite took the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2019 by unanimous vote, and the following year won Best Picture and other major categories at the Academy Awards.
Along the way the line became a media idiom. According to Seoul Economic Daily, President Moon Jae-in quoted it in his congratulatory message after the Oscars, and outlets including SBS and Money Today used the same sentence in headlines covering the Oscar campaign and the Cannes win. In film coverage it effectively served as a nickname for Parasite itself.
It is usually listed alongside the film's other famous lines — "the plan that never fails is having no plan," "the smell crosses the line," "she's not rich but nice; she's nice because she's rich." This one travelled furthest because it reads equally well as praise and as sarcasm.
How it is used
- As praise for someone's foresight or resourcefulness
- As sarcasm, pretending to admire a shortcut or a piece of cunning
- On discovering that seemingly improvised behavior was deliberate all along
- As shorthand for Parasite itself
