Origin

The line belongs to Kang Hae-sang, the villain played by Son Suk-ku in the 2022 film The Roundup (Korean title: Crime City 2). In full: "Do I look like I'm in the rental car business to you? You've been kidnapped."

The staging is what makes the line. According to Namuwiki's account, Kang first appears in Ho Chi Minh City in 2008, waiting in a van while posing as a rental car operator in order to abduct the son of a loan company chairman. The victim believes he is in a hired car, and this line is what breaks that belief.

Its force comes from being phrased as notification rather than threat. He is not frightening anyone or making demands — he is informing them of something that has already happened, with the rhetorical question in front serving to confirm their mistake. That is why a brief moment early in the film became the sentence that stands for both the character and the movie.

The same source adds that the line is said to be something a survivor of the real case the film drew on actually heard from their captor.

It did not become a meme on release. Namuwiki records that the line came back into use as a meme through KakaoTalk open chat rooms one to two years after the film opened. The movie's success had made the line widely known; its hardening into a catchphrase came much later.

The venue shaped the usage. Open chat is exactly where someone gets pulled into a room without warning — the situation of finding yourself somewhere without knowing how — and the line fits that precisely. Parodies on social media and YouTube followed, broadening it into everyday joking.

In the film the scene is genuinely menacing; as a meme it works in reverse. The joke only lands where no real threat is possible, so the safer the context, the better it plays.
