‘Call, and double it’ is a line from the 2006 Korean film Tazza: The High Rollers. It is spoken by Kwak Cheol-yong, played by Kim Eung-soo, who, confident in the game he has rigged, meets Goni’s challenge and declares that he intends to keep driving the stakes up.

In gambling terms it is a call: the first half matches whatever the opponent has put in, and the second raises it to twice that.

Spread

The line attracted no particular attention when the film was released. It became a meme thirteen years later, in the second half of 2019, when the sequel Tazza: One Eyed Jack sent audiences back to the original. Kwak Cheol-yong, a supporting character, was reappraised at the same time.

It spread fastest where the situation actually matched. Cryptocurrency and stock trading communities adopted it for the act of buying more to recover a loss, and retailers borrowed it for buy-one-get-one style promotions.

The actor joined in as well: Kim Eung-soo appeared on a number of variety programmes performing the line himself, which raised its profile again.

Anyone who knows how Kwak Cheol-yong ends up in the film will hear the line as a symbol of overreach as much as of nerve, and both readings are present in how it is actually used.
