Origin
"Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan" is both the Japanese title of the TV anime My Deer Friend Nokotan, which began airing in July 2024, and the hook of its opening theme. The source is a gag manga by Oshioshio; the anime is directed by Masahiko Ohta and produced by WIT STUDIO, with investment, distribution and promotion handled by Twin Engine. It became available in Korea on July 22nd, 2024 through services including Wavve, TVING, Watcha and SeriesOn.
The title is itself a tongue twister. It strings together the protagonist's name, Shikanoko Noko, her nickname Nokotan, and Koshitan, the nickname of another character, Torako. Parsed for meaning it comes out to something like "the deer girl, ambling along, biding her time" — but what actually caught people was not the meaning. It was the sound of the same syllables rolling over and over.
Spread
The decisive push came from the production side. Twin Engine released a video looping just the intro of the opening theme for a full hour, and it took off well beyond expectations — the one-hour loop ended up circulating more widely than the song itself, which meant plenty of people knew that one stretch of audio without ever watching the show.
Parodies then poured out across short-form platforms, especially YouTube Shorts and TikTok: dancing to it, laying it under unrelated footage, mashing it with other tracks. Short, repetitive and imitable without knowing a word of the lyrics, it was ideally shaped for the format.
Variations
In Korea it went further than sound mimicry and became a sentence template. Users write "__ nokonoko __ tattat," filling the blanks with words that fit the situation, keeping the original rhythm while swapping out the meaning entirely. Phrases built this way around specific gaming scenarios are the best-known examples. Since the title was a wordplay to begin with, the derivatives being wordplay too makes for an unusually consistent lineage.
How It's Used
- Simply repeating the addictive sound in imitation
- As rhythmic background audio in video edits
- Building jokes by dropping a situation into the "__ nokonoko __ tattat" frame
- Complaining that you can't get the song out of your head
